Government mulls extending insurance subsidy for hog raisers

By Prince Golez

The government is looking at an insurance subsidy for commercial hog raisers amid the supply shortage of pork in the National Capital Region (NCR), Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said.

In a televised briefing Tuesday, Nograles said the Cabinet is considering a proposal to provide commercial hog raisers a 50-percent insurance subsidy to boost pork supply in Metro Manila.

“One proposal being studied is an insurance subsidy of 50 percent for commercial hog raisers that will utilize the Quick Response Fund (QRF) under the QRF of the Department of Agriculture,” the Palace official said.

“This is just one initiative being considered to help our hog farmers increase supplies,” he added.

Earlier, President Rodrigo Duteret imposed a 60-day freeze on pork and chicken products due to the reported supply shortage caused by the African Swine Fever outbreak.

Under Executive Order No. 124, the price ceiling for pork in NCR was set at P270 per kilo, pork liempo at P300 per kilo, and dressed chicken at P160 per kilo.
