Judge who handed verdict in Maguindanao massacre shortlisted for CA seat

Quezon City Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes, the magistrate who convicted members of Ampatuan clan for the 2009 Maguindanao massacre, has been named among 36 persons recommended by the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) to be appointed to the Court of Appeals (CA).

Meanwhile, Malacanang has received on Wednesday (Feb. 24) the list of candidates among whom President Rodrigo Duterte can pick six for the CA.

In its letter to Duterte, the JBC said it submitted the “nominations for six positions of Associate Justice of the court of appeals…”

The JBC noted that four of seats became vacant due to the promotions to the Supreme Court (SC) of Justices Rodil Zalameda, Mario Lopez, Edgardo Delos Santos, and Samuel Gaerlan.

While, CA Justices Luisa Padilla and Jane Aurora Lantion have already retired in January last year.

Last Dec. 19, Reyes issued a decision which convicted 28 principal accused of 57 counts of murder and sentenced them to reclusion perpetua.

Those convicted include the sons of late former Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan Sr., namely, former Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Governor Datu Zaldy Ampatuan, former Datu Unsay Mayor Datu Andal “Unsay” Ampatuan Jr., and former Shariff Aguak Mayor Datu Anwar Ampatuan Sr.

The case concerns the Nov. 23, 2009 killings in Ampatuan, Maguindanao where 58 persons including 32 members of the media were killed.

Those killed were part of the convoy of then Buluan town vice mayor and now Maguindanao Governor Esmael Mangudadatu which was on its way for the filing of his certificate of candidacy for the gubernatorial race of Maguindanao.
