Kulang pa! Makabayan Bloc says laws vs red-tagging ‘insufficient, defective, lacking’

Members of the Makabayan Bloc of the House of Representatives on Thursday said present legal remedies against red-tagging are “insufficient, defective and lacking” as a Senate panel concluded there’s no need to criminalize red-tagging in the country.

“Current legal remedies are insufficient, defective and lacking. Human rights violators have largely escaped accountability,” the Makabayan Bloc said in a statement.

“Experience has shown that even with the protective writs (habeas corpus, amparo, data), victims remain vulnerable to harassment and fail to deter attacks,” the group said.

The progressive lawmakers issued the statement after the Senate committee on national defense, which conducted an investigation into the red-tagging issue against the military said in its 66-page report that there is no longer a need to criminalize red-tagging in the Philippines since there are already legal remedies available to an aggrieved party.
