Malacañang on Monday congratulated British human rights lawyer Karim Khan for his election as the next chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.
Khan will replace lead prosecutor Fatou Bensouda whose 9-year-term expires in June.
“Binabati rin po natin ang ating kaibigan, kasama po sa International Criminal Bar, si Karim Khan ng Britanya dahil siya po ang nahalal na bagong prosecutor ng International Criminal Court,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in his televised briefing.
“Si Khan ay isa sa kinikilalang pinakamagaling na defense counsel na humaharap po sa mga international tribunals at kung hindi ako nagkakamali naimbitahan ko na po si Prosecutor Khan dito sa Pilipinas para mag-lecture doon sa mga training na ginawa natin para sa investigation, prosecution ng mga extra-legal killings,” he added.
Roque also reminded Khan of the ICC Prosecutor’s decision not to investigate the possible war crimes by British forces in Iraq because authorities have investigated the allegations.
“Inaasahan natin na dahil si Mr. Khan ay isang batikan na defense counsel at isang Briton ay hindi niya kakalimutan ang desisyon ng ICC na hindi pupuwede mag-imbestiga ang prosecutor ng ICC lalung-lalo na kung ang isang bansa kung saan nangyari o kung saan may mga nasyunal siya na inaakusuhan ng krimen ay handang mag imbestiga at litisin,” according to him.
“’Yan po ang desisyon ng ICC sa kaso ng Iraq at United Kingdom kung saan nagdesisyon ang Prosecutor na hindi na siya dapat magpatuloy ng kanyang imbestigasyon at hinahayaan niya sa mga lokal na mga piskal sa Britanya ang pag-iimbestiga,” he also said.
Last December, Bensouda’s office said it found “reasonable basis” to believe that crimes against humanity had been committed in President Rodrigo Duterte’s “war on drugs.”
The ICC will decide whether to open a formal investigation into the drug war in the first half of 2021, her report stated.
