Cartels dictating the prices of pork and other food products will be in the cross hairs of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), assured Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra.
“If there is a cartel or if there is a group manipulating the supply and pricing of basic food stuff, then the NBI will surely focus on the existence of such group or syndicate or cartel,” he said.
The secretary made the assurance this out now that both the NBI and the Department of Justice (DOJ) have been included in the proposed sub-task group on economic intelligence.
While the sub-task group has yet to be formally created, Guevarra said he has “directed the NBI to start preparing.”
“The DOJ and the NBI will provide full support for the investigation of the situation,” he said.
Guevarra noted that the proposal for the creation of the sub-task group was raised by the Department of Agriculture (DA) during the last Cabinet meeting due to concerns over sudden spikes of prices of basic food including pork.
