Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque refused to confirm whether President Rodrigo Duterte named Cabinet Secretaries as potential senatorial candidates for the 2022 elections.
Roque invoked executive privilege in response to a report by POLITIKO that Duterte mentioned him and Public Works Secretary Mark Villar, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo, and Presidential Peace Process Adviser and vaccine czar Carlito Galvez as possible Senate bets.
“Alam niyo po kasi ang aming pagmi-meeting ay covered din by executive privilege,” the Palace official said.
“I think yung mga bagay-bagay na ‘yan po dahil hindi naman po yan kasama sa agenda will remain to be confidential. So, I cannot comment on that po,” he also said.
In 2019, Duterte endorsed the Senate candidacy of former police chief Ronald dela Rosa, his longtime aide Bong Go, Maguindanao Rep. Zajid Mangudadatu, Senators Aquilino Pimentel III, Sonny Angara, JV Ejercito, and and Cynthia Villar, Taguig Rep. Pia Cayetano, former presidential political adviser Francis Tolentino, folk singer Freddie Aguilar, and Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos.
Dela Rosa, Go, Pimentel, Angara, Villar, Cayetano, Tolentino, and Marcos made it into the winner’s circle.
