Malacañang on Sunday expressed sympathy to the family of former Senator Victor Ziga Sr. who passed away recently.
“We express our condolences to the family, relatives, friends and all the loved ones of former Senator Victor Ziga for his untimely passing last January 31, at the age of 75,” Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo said in a statement.
Panelo said Ziga, who became an Assemblyman at the Batasang Pambansa and a Minister of General Services before he was elected to the Senate in 1987, embodied the patriotism, integrity, and competence expected from a Filipino leader.
“Even after his political career, he continued to serve the Filipino people through various outreach programs and medical missions. He was also involved in numerous civic organizations,” according to the Palace official.
Ziga, also a former Governor of Albay, is most known for having authored Republic Act No. (RA) 6728 that provides assistance to students and teachers; RA 6948 that standardizes the benefits of the military and veterans; RA or the Magna Carta of Public Health Workers; and the Local Government Code of 1991.
He was also among the senators, referred to as the “Magnificent 12,” who voted to expel the US military bases from the country in 1991.
“May the Almighty grant him eternal repose and may the perpetual light shine upon him,” said Panelo.
