Parlade’s red-tagging ‘playbook’ not about facts or reality, ex-VP Binay says

Former Vice President Jojo Binay is doubtful that a military officer will resign or get fired by his superiors over his alleged red-tagging spree.

In a Facebook post, Binay said it was “pointless” to demand the removal of Army Lt. Gen. Antonio Parlade Jr. since he was serving his “political benefactors.”

“It’s pointless asking General Parlade to resign because he won’t. Hindi aalis yan sa pwesto. And I doubt if he will be fired. What he is doing is precisely what his political benefactors want,” he said.

Parlade earlier drew sharp criticisms over his controversial comment against an Inquirer.net reporter Tetch Torres-Tupas who wrote a story on a petition against the anti-terror law in the Supreme Court. He branded Tupas’ story as supposed fake and propaganda.

Binay, a human rights lawyer, slammed Parlade’s “playbook” on red-tagging anyone who opposes or criticizes the government. He said his red-tagging was not about “facts or reality.”

“Parlade’s red-tagging is not about facts or reality. It is not grounded on respect for the free exchange of ideas,” he said.

“Anyone who opposes or criticizes government – or even files a news report not to his liking – is either a sympathizer or a certified terrorist that needs to be dealt with harshly. This is the playbook and Parlade is coach, player, and cheerleader rolled into one,” he said.

Binay won’t be taken aback if the military officer echoes Palace spokesman Harry Roque’s “drop dead” comment against critics.

“I won’t be surprised if Parlade will imitate the Palace spokesperson and tell his critics ‘Manigas kayo,'” he said.
