Will Duterte take Pfizer, Astrazeneca COVID vaccines?

By Prince Golez

It is up to President Rodrigo Duterte’s physician which brand of coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccine will be given to him, Malacañang said.

Duterte earlier expressed preference for vaccines made by China and Russia. But, the first batch of the vaccines arriving in the country by mid-February will be from United States drugmaker Pfizer and British-Swedish AstraZeneca.

“Let’s just say this issue will have to be discussed by the President with his physicians. He is, of course, under advice from his physician,” according to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.

When asked if the President will be allowed to select his preferred Covid-19 vaccine, Roque said Duterte’s doctor will also consider the framework developed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“Kasi hindi ko pa alam kung ano ang magiging desisyon talaga ng FDA kung hanggang anong edad ibigay at anong klaseng bakuna. But as I said, he is under advice from his physician right now,” he added.

The spokesman had said Duterte will be among the first to receive a vaccine because he is a senior citizen.

Healthcare workers and persons with comorbidities will also be given a higher priority.
