Quezon City Rep. Alfred Vargas is trying hard to increase his public profile ahead of the 2022 elections.
Over the past few weeks, Vargas has been busy updating his social media accounts with posts on his projects and opinions on various topics.
To make sure netizens—particularly voters—take notice, Vargas had his staff promote his Facebook page. One such attempt by his staffer, Sybhel Cordero, caught a netizen’s eye because she allowed herself to be publicly identified.
In a February 6 tweet, netizen @lamielcarl asked: “They’re using taxpayer’s money to boost congressmen’s Facebook pages???” He then shared a screenshot of Vargas’ Facebook page, where the word, “sponsored” was indicated. Next to it was the phrase, “Pais for by Sybhel Abraham Cordero.”
A little online research showed Cordero used to work at the Aquino-era Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office, leading the netizen to assume Malacanang paid for boosting Vargas’ Facebook page.
But even though some Twitter users pointed out that Cordero now works for Vargas, her move raises questions on whether she used her personal funds to promote her boss’ Facebook page or if it’s charged to his office.
It’s also interesting to know why Vargas is on a self-promotion spree in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
