‘Di pumalpak ang gobyerno! ECQ reimposition due to new COVID variants – Palace

By Prince Golez

The government has reverted Metro Manila and four other provinces under an enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) because of the emergence and potential spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) variants, Malacañang said on Monday.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque made the comment in response to statements that reimposition of a strict quarantine status in the National Capital Region and the province of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal was due to the government’s failures to adequately address the pandemic.

“Wala pong katotohanan iyan. Ang katotohanan po, mula hanggang February 22 ay nakontrol na po natin ang pagkalat ng COVID and, more or less, humigit-kumulang ay 1,000 cases na lang tayo a day. Pero pumasok po ang mga bagong variant – mayroon pong UK variant, mayroong South African, mayroong Brazil at ngayon mayroon pa pong Philippine variant,” Roque said in an interview with GMA-7’s Unang Hirit.

“Mabuti na lang po na-discover na hindi mas nakakamatay ang mga variant na ito, pero ang talaga naman pong hindi maitatanggi, mas nakakahawa po. Hindi lang Pilipinas ang nag-iisa. Sa buong mundo po, talagang dumami ang mga kaso kaya hindi naman po natatanggal tayo sa ating posisyon na number 30 sa buong mundo,” he also said.

Under reimposed ECQ, only essential businesses and industries, such as those providing healthcare and food services, are allowed to operate.
