President Duterte didn’t have the usual birthday cake to mark his special day on March 28, 2021.
The President instead settled with second best thing to a cake — a cup of rice with a birthday candle — to mark another milestone in his life. Duterte was looking relaxed in a white shirt while celebrating his birthday at home in Davao City.
There was no grand party as the President chose to have a low-key observance of his birthday during the pandemic.
Photos of the President blowing out a single candle on his alternative cake were shared by his former aide and now Senator Bong Go on social media. In describing the birthday photos, he said Duterte chose to celebrate his birthday without fanfare. He said the President had a simple meal for his birthday.
“Nag Blow ng Kandila ngayon lang! Simpleng pananghalian lamang,” the senator said in a Facebook post.
In all the years he served Duterte, Go said the former Davao City mayor has not held large birthday parties. He said he chose to follow Duterte’s footstep and skip holding parties during his birthday.
“Ngayong kaarawan ni Tatay Digong, samahan natin siya sa simpleng pagdasal at pasasalamat sa Panginoon. Marami pa namang selebrasyon sa buhay natin. Ang importante ngayon ay alalahanin natin na buhay tayo at patuloy tayong nagtutulungan para malampasan ang krisis na ito,” he said.
On the eve of his birthday, Duterte approved a recommendation to bring back Metro Manila and four other provinces under stricter lockdown to fight the increasing cases of coronavirus. The lockdown, described as enhanced community quarantine, will run until April 4.
