Duterte to Ping, Risa: Vaccine funds still with multilateral banks

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said the government’s coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccine funds are still with the lending banks.

Duterte made the statement after Senators Panfilo Lacson and Risa Hontiveros questioned the absence of Covid-19 vaccines despite billions of financial loans.

The Philippines earlier secured funding from the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank to procure vaccines.

“If you are afraid of corruption, let your mind go easy because these things are not susceptible to anything. The money is in the hands of the bank and they collect ‘yong nagpabili sa atin ng bakuna from the bank,” the Chief Executive said in a televised address.

“Ang buong akala kasi nila ‘yong pera na bilyon na bilyon na ibinigay nila nandiyan na sa kamay natin, that it’s cold cash, at ang anuhin, nasaan na ‘yong pera? Sinasabi na natin time and again that the money is with the lending banks,” he added.

Duterte said the government has not used “any single centavo” from the foreign loans as the vaccines purchased by the Philippines haven’t arrived yet.

“What is in our hands are the donated vaccines,” he added, referring to the 600,000 doses of China-donated Sinovac vaccines and 525,600 AstraZeneca vaccines doses from the COVAX facility.
