Assistant Minority Leader and Gabriela party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas on Wednesday said that the implication of several officers of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) to the human trafficking scheme is alarming.
Brosas pointed out that the BI is part of the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT), which was supposed to deter human trafficking.
“It appears that a complete trafficking business is thriving at the BI, with the import of Chinese workers for POGOs and the export of Filipino women to Syria. Papano nangyari ito, gayong isa nga dapat ang BI sa magtitiyak ng pagpapatupad ng batas kontra human trafficking?” Brosas asked.
Brosas urged the Department of Justice (DOJ) to thoroughly investigate the matter and charge those who are making a living on trafficked women.
She is also pushing fro the comprehensive review of the Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act (Republic Act 10364) to determine if government agencies are doing their part to prevent trafficking.
In a Senate hearing on March 23, it was revealed that the immigration officers linked to the in-bound “pastillas scheme” are the same ones approving the documents of women to be trafficked to Syria.
