No foul play: Ex-Calauan mayor Antonio Sanchez dies, 72

Rape-slay convict former Calauan, Laguna mayor Antonio Sanchez passed away at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City on Saturday morning (March 27), Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Deputy Director General Gabriel Chaclag has confirmed.

“There is no sign of foul play,” Chaclag said of the 72-year-old convict’s death.

“He had existing conditions such as chronic kidney disease, hypertension, recurring gastro enteritis, prostate problems and asthma,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chaclag said Sanchez’s next of kin have been informed about his demise.

The BuCor spokespersons said “at about 7am, PDL Antonio Sanchez was found unresponsive at his cell.”

“When his cell mates woke him up this morning, he was unresponsive,” Chaclag said.

Chaclag said Sanchez was “brought to the NBP Hospital by his cell mates and was attended to by medical staff.”

“He was declared DOA (dead on arrival) and subject for autopsy as per procedure on sudden deaths,” he added.

Chaclag noted that Sanchez was last seen “at 10 pm still alive preparing to sleep.”

Sanchez was convicted for rape with homicide for the 1993 deaths of University of the Philippines (UP) Los Banos students Eileen Sarmenta and her boyfriend Allan Gomez.

He was also convicted for the 1991 murder of the of Nelson Penalosa and his son Rickson, who were supporters of his political rival.

In 2019, Sanchez got involved in the controversy concerning his early released due to number of good conduct time allowance (GCTA) he acquired but the Department of Justice (DOJ) had determined he was unqualified to benefit for early release under the law.
