By Prince Golez

Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo has expressed sadness over the passing of veteran singer Claire de la Fuente who died of cardiac arrest after being diagnosed with coronavirus disease.

Her son Gigo de Guzman announced on Tuesday morning that the 63-year-old dela Fuente, who became famous with her jukebox hit “Sayang,” died in her sleep.

“Nakakalungkot, pero, hanggang ngayon, hindi ako makapaniwalang namatay na yung kaibigan nating si Claire,” Panelo said in his commentary show “Counterpoint” Wednesday.

“Punong-puno ng buhay ito. Madaldal pati ito [at] maganda mag kuwento ito. Pero ako, gustong gusto ko yung kanyang tinig talaga, napaka effortless,” he added.

De Guzman said his mom had to stay in a tent outside Las Piñas Doctors Hospital while waiting to be admitted. De la Fuente was later taken to Pope John II Hospital and Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
