Palace Spokesperson Harry Roque on Monday defended President Rodrigo Duterte from criticisms after images showing a lechon (roasted pig) during his 76th birthday party in Davao City surfaced online.
In an interview on GMA News’ Unang Balita, Roque accused critics of Duterte, particularly Bayan Muna Representative Ferdinand Gaite, of crab mentality.
The President, he added, never claimed to be hungry.
“Tingin ko naman utak talangka lang po iyan. Birthday naman po ng Presidente, 76, ang importante po hindi magarbo ang selebrasyon,” according to him.
Gaite earlier said: “Acting poor for your birthday photo ops when you’re not really poor is just mocking those who truly have nothing to put on their tables for their own birthdays.”
On Sunday, Duterte’s former longtime aide and Senator Christopher Go shared photos of the chief executive blowing a candle planted on a serving of rice.
Another post, however, showed Duterte sitting at the table laden with food, including a roasted pig for a centerpiece.
