Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo took exception to Senator Panfilo Lacson’s remark that asking him to step down and help the government in its coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccination program was irrational.
“Siya ang irrational,” Panelo said in an interview with POLITISKOOP Wednesday.
In a March 23 tweet, Lacson shrugged off Panelo’s advice, saying that he is an elected official with a six-year mandate.
Panelo, however, insisted that the lawmaker can still deliver public service as an executive branch official.
“Kung lilipat siya sa executive, magse-service pa rin siya sa taong bayan. Sabi niya, ‘Meron akong kontrata’. Ang problema sa kanya nakakalimutan niya ang kasaysayan ng Pilipinas,” the Palace official said.
“Nung si Ramon Magsaysay was a member of Congress, he resigned to be the Defense Secretary. Nung si Cory Aquino ay presidente, tinap niya si Raul Manglapus na senador noon. Nag-resign din para maging Foreign Secretary. Ito naman si Mark Villar eh di ba member ng Congress, tinap din siya na maging Public Works Secretary, nag resign din.
“Madaling sabi, hindi ito unprecedented, nangyayari ito. Kaya yung sinasabi niyang irrational, siya ang irrational,” he concluded.
The exchange between Lacson and Panelo stemmed from the former’s tweet last week criticizing the long wait for Covid-19 vaccines despite billions of allotment for procurement.
