Metro Manila and four of its surrounding provinces should revert to general community quarantine (GCQ) so the economy can recover, National Economic and Development Authority Secretary Karl Chua said Monday (May 3).
In an interview on ANC’s “Headstart,” Chua said the government should beef up its COVID-19 testing, isolation and treatment capacity during the time that the so-called “NCR Plus bubble” is under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ).
Metro Manila and the provinces of Laguna, Bulacan, Cavite and Rizal will remain under MECQ until May 14.
“We have to move out of MECQ, we have to go to GCQ and even better. A big part of that, 95 percent is our own personal behavior and everyone knows already what to do,” Chua said.
NEDA expects the country’s gross domestic product to rise between 6.5% and 7.5% this year after it fell by 9.6%.
Aside from a calibrated opening of the economy, Chua said it is important for the government to speed up its COVID-19 vaccination rollout to boost consumer and investor confidence.
