‘Di gusto sa Pilipinas! 3.5K Pinoys aiming to practice nursing in US

By Billy Begas

Some 3,550 Filipino nurses took the U.S. licensure examination in the first semester of 2021.

Anakalusugan Rep. Michael Defensor said passing the National Council Licensure Examination administered by the U.S. National Council of State Boards of Nursing Inc. is a requirement to practice the nursing profession in America.

Defensor said the number is 8.6% higher compared to the 3,269 Philippine nursing graduates who took the US professional eligibility test for the first time in the same semester last 2020.

The number of Filipinos taking the test for the first time is considered a good indicator as to how many of them are trying to enter the profession in the U.S, Defensor said.

A total of 667 Indians, 560 Puerto Ricans, 492 Kenyans, and 260 Nepalese also took the NCLEX for the first time in the first half of this year.

Since 1994, a total of 215,599 Philippine-schooled nurses have taken the NCLEX for the first time, Defensor said.

Around 46% of Filipino nurses pass the NCLEX on their first attempt, while around 27% of repeaters make the grade.

Defensor has been pushing to double the salaries of nurses in the country to discourage them from working abroad.

He authored House Bill 7933, which will increase the nurses’ starting monthly salary from P33,575 to P60,901.
