Then there were 3: Find out who’s shortlisted for Chief Justice post after Peralta’s retirement

Three magistrates of the Supreme Court (SC) have landed in the Judicial and Bar Council’s (JBC) shortlist of candidates recommended for the position of chief justice.

Those who are in the shortlist are SC Justice Alexander Gesmundo, Ramon Paul Hernando, and Estela Perlas-Bernabe.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, an Ex Officio member of the JBC, said members of the JBC, including EX Officio Chairperson and Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta, signed the recommendation on Monday (March 22).

Guevarra added the recommendation will be forwarded to Malacanang on Tuesday (March 23).

President Rodrigo Duterte will himself pick who among the three magistrates will succeed Peralta who decided to retire early on his 69th birthday this March 27, a year before his compulsory retirement next year.

Duterte picked Peralta as chief justice in October 2019 to replace retired Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin.

Peralta has been a magistrate of the SC since 2009 when he got appointed by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Prior this, Peralta has served as magistrate of the Sandiganbayan from 2002 to 2009.
