Volvo, Geely to Share Infotainment Systems

Volvo Cars will soon be licensing its infotainment system platform to other members of the Geely Group and even other carmakers. This as they’ve setup a new joint venture with technology company ECARX.

Through the new joint venture, Volvo Cars and ECARX will continue and expand the development of the Android Automotive operating system.

After three years of development, it was rolled out in Volvo Cars and Polestar vehicles in 2020. It marked the first time infotainment systems came with Google apps and services built in.

Volvo Cars initially plans to integrate the platform developed in the joint venture into their vehicles as well as Polestar cars, each with their own unique user interfaces. After that, it will be rolled out to other members of the Geely Group including Geely Auto, Lynk & Co, and Lotus. Eventually, they will offer the technology to other car manufacturers as well.

The joint venture is expected to become operational in the third quarter of 2021.
