COVID slowing down in Metro Manila: experts

By Prince Golez

The imposition of strict lockdown last month has improved the coronavirus (Covid-19) situation in Metro Manila, independent research group OCTA said Sunday.

According to OCTA, the average new daily coronavirus infections (3,841) in the National Capital Region, the pandemic epicenter, from April 18 to 24 saw a 20 percent decline compared to the prior week.

The current average, on one hand, is 30 percent lower than the 5,552 daily average of new cases three weeks ago, the research group said.

Its report also indicated that the virus’ reproduction rate, which measures how many people an infected individual will infect, in the capital region dropped to 0.93.

OCTA likewise observed testing positivity rate in NCR fell from 25 percent three weeks ago to 19 percent over the past week, from an average of 26,120 tests conducted daily.

Meanwhile, experts said the hospital bed occupancy in NCR decreased to 61 percent while intensive care unit bed occupancy also declined to 71 percent.

Aside from Metro Manila, other areas which recorded negative growth rates in daily cases are Calabarzon (-12 percent), Cagayan Valley (-2 percent), Central Luzon (4 percent), Central Visayas (-2 percent), and Western Visayas (-24 percent).
