President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday hailed the heroism of Lapu-Lapu as the nation commemorates the quincentennial anniversary of the Battle of Mactan.
In a recorded speech, Duterte recalled how Lapu-Lapu and his men stood their ground against Spanish invaders led by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.
“They never cowered against the might of the enemy and they bled in defense of their homeland. Today, we remember their gallantry by honoring the worthy heirs of Lapu-Lapu’s legacy,” the Chief Executive said.
Duterte also recognized the heroic efforts of the country’s health care workers who work on the front lines during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Let us draw inspiration from the heroes of the past and present as we overcome pandemic and rebuild a stronger and more resilient nation.
“I wish everyone a meaningful commemoration. Mabuhay ang Sambayanang Pilipino. Mabuhay ang idol kong si Lapu-Lapu,” he added.
