President Rodrigo Duterte has welcomed the commitment of the United States (US) in working with ASEAN on maritime security and domain awareness issues.
To expand the ASEAN-US strategic partnership, Duterte underscored the need to sustain political dialogues, economic engagements and sociocultural ties.
He cited the importance of ASEAN centrality, what with the “changing” regional landscape and seascape.
At the virtual ASEAN-US Summit, the President reminded the new AUKUS (Australia, United Kingdom and US) alliance that ASEAN plays a leading role in security matters in Southeast Asia.
“We take full account of statements that AUKUS will promote peace and stability in our region and maintain support for ASEAN Centrality,” said Duterte.
“But one thing should be clear for all stakeholders: ASEAN’s central role in the evolving regional security architecture must be strengthened. And that this or other arrangements must complement and not complicate our working methods for cooperation,” he added.
