President Rodrigo Duterte will skip the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting on April 24 in Jakarta, Indonesia, Malacañang said.
During a televised briefing Thursday, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Duterte won’t attend the summit due to the “issue of face-to-face.”
Duterte has designated Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Teodoro Locsin as his special envoy to the meeting, according to Roque.
“Marami rin pong I think yung issue lang po talaga could it be face-to-face or could it be virtual, marami ring pong hindi makakarating na heads of state ng ASEAN personally,” he added.
The DFA in a statement said the special Leaders’ meeting aims to address urgent matters in the region, including recovery efforts, the situation in Myanmar, ASEAN community building efforts, external relations, and regional and international issues.
