Malacañang on Thursday dismissed the recent drop of the Philippines’ lower ranking in the World Press Freedom “de minimis.”
Reporters Without Borders’ World Press Freedom Index ranked the country 138th among 180 countries, two notches down from the previous year.
“Unang una, dalawang position lang po yan, two positions lower. De minimis po yan, wala masyadong ibig sabihin. Pangalawa po, sa buong ASEAN pang-apat pa rin po tayo. We are ahead of Myanmar, Cambodia, Brunei, Singapore, Laos and Vietnam,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque explained.
In his virtual presser, Roque also disagreed with the basis of the global ranking, saying the issues against broadcasting firm ABS-CBN and news website Rappler are not affronts to press freedom.
“We dispute also the ranking because yung Reporters Without Borders considered as affronts to press freedom itong Rappler issue na alam naman natin na dinesesyunan ng (Securities and Exchange Commission) na hindi naman appointed ni Presidente (Rodrigo) Duterte at mga appointees ni Presidente (Benigno) Aquino (III) pa,” according to him.
“Atsaka itong ABS-CBN na alam naman natin na kinakailangan ng prangkisa. We also dispute that these issues shouldn’t have led to the decline in our ranking,” he added.
