For now, Palace sees no need to make Covid-19 vaccination mandatory

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte has no position yet on making coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccination mandatory, his spokesman said Monday.

Palace Spokesperson Harry Roque made the comment after Cavite Rep. Elpideo Barzaga Jr. introduced House Bill No. 9252, seeking to make Covid-19 vaccination a requirement for Filipinos.

“Wala pa pong posisyon ang ating Presidente tungkol dito. Ang tingin natin ay dumadami na o tumataas na ang vaccine confidence kaya ang problema natin hindi sapat ang bakuna doon sa mga gustong magpabakuna,” Roque said in his virtual presser.

But, the secretary noted that the government can exercise police powers to require mandatory vaccinations if needed.

“Pero sa ngayon naman po, mukhang hindi naman kinakailangang mandatory yan dahil inaantay pa natin yung bulto ng ating mga bakuna,” according to him.

“Tama lang naman na habang wala pa ang karamihang bakuna natin eh hindi pa nagnanais magpabakuna ang lahat,” he added.
