Duterte office still studying plan to declare state of emergency over ASF

By Prince Golez

The Office of the President (OP) is studying the proposal to declare a state of emergency due to the spread of African swine fever (ASF), according to Malacañang.

When asked if President Rodrigo Duterte is still willing to declare a state of calamity to address the threat of the disease, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said: “Pinagaaralan pong mabuti ‘yan ng Office of the President.”

Roque also said the OP will undertake “completed staff work” before the proposal reaches Duterte.

“Sinisugrado po natin na magkakaroon ng completed staff work bago po ipresenta kay Presidente,” according to him.

Last month, the Department of Agriculture recommended the declaration of a national state of emergency amid the ASF outbreak, which has resulted in high pork prices, pork supply gap, and decimation of local hog industry.

Duterte earlier issued Executive Order 124 imposing a price ceiling on pork and chicken products due to rising consumer prices caused by the ASF and the coronavirus pandemic.
