Palace mum on alleged Chinese harassment of Filipino boat

By Prince Golez

MalacaƱang has no reaction to a report that two Chinese military vessels chased down a Filipino vessel in the West Philippine Sea.

In a Viber message, Spokesperson Harry Roque said they will defer to the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of National Defense (DND) over the matter.

“Defer to SFA (Secretary of Foreign Affairs) and DND,” Roque said Friday.

When pressed for a Palace statement, the secretary said: “Defer to these two agencies.”

On Friday, ABS-CBN News reported that a civilian vessel with its news team aboard was on its way to Ayungin Shoal, where a Filipino marine detachment is located, when it received a radio message from the China Coast Guard asking for their identity.

The Filipino captain decided to steer the boat away from the shoal but a China Coast Guard vessel followed the ship on its path home to mainland Palawan for an hour, the report stated.
