Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo on Sunday expressed support for Deputy Speaker Wes Gatchalian’s call on the World Health Organization (WHO) to set aside its “assumptions” against certain industries that plan to buy coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccines for their workers.
Gatchalian earlier criticized the statement of WHO Philippines Rabindra Representative Rabindra Abeyasinghe that the proposal of the Department of Health to exclude manufacturers of tobacco, alcohol and infant formula from the government’s vaccine procurement program was due to the concern that they would use the vaccines to promote their products.
“Kailangan sa bakuna, sa pagbibili ng bakuna, lahat dapat ay magkaroon ng pagkakataon na makakuha nito at magamit,” Panelo said in his commentary show “Counterpoint.”
“Lahat dapat may access. Hindi pupuwedeng lilimatahan mo,” he added.
Gatchalian cited Republic Act No. 11525 or the Covid-19 Vaccination Law which allows companies to procure Covid-19 vaccines for their employees and their families.
He likewise welcomed the removal of the discriminatory provision barring several firms from procuring vaccines.
