Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez is a bit annoyed at some senators critical of the government’s stance on the West Philippine Sea issue.
Gomez, in a Facebook post, echoed the challenge made by a former Palace official to the senators to realign the budget for the new Senate building to develop the country’s islands in the Kalayaan Island Group. He said senators ought to consider using the budget instead for “something more essential.”
He shared former Press Secretary Rigoberto Tiglao’s Manila Times opinion piece titled “Use P15B for new Senate building to defend PH sovereignty.”
“These noisy Senators must have a good read at this article,” Gomez wrote on Facebook.
“And let’s see if they will realign the funding to be used for their building at the bgc for something more essential in this time of pandemic,” he said.
The Senate earlier set aside around P8.9 billion for the construction of a complex inside Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City.
The Senate complex, rising in the 18,320 square meter parcel of land at the Navy Village, will consist of four towers with 1,200 parking spaces.
Tiglao, in his article, called Senators Panfilo Lacson, Risa Hontiveros and Franklin Drilon for being “hypocritical” for supposedly denouncing President Duterte’s alleged inaction to protect the country’s sovereignty in the territorial dispute with China.
The former Philippine ambassador to Greece then issued a challenge to these senators to use the funds for “luxurious” Senate building as part of the government’s development funds in Spratlys Islands.
“If they are so concerned about our sovereignty in the KIG, these three senators should spearhead a move to put on hold the construction of that monument to their superegos and work out some way to reallocate the P15 funds for it to instead to develop our facilities in that disputed area,” Tiglao said.
