The dismissal of the election protest against Vice President Leni Robredo shows that the allegations of former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. against her is unfounded.
Election lawyer Romulo Macalintal, the lead counsel of Robredo, pointed this out as he hailed the decision of the Supreme Court (SC), sitting as Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET), to dismiss the election protest which alleges that election fraud took place in the 2016 vice presidential polls.
“That unanimous verdict, once and for all, upheld and sustained the legitimate assumption and reign by then Representative Leni Robredo to the Office of the Vice-President in the May 2016 vice-presidential election and totally erased any legal obstacles to her right to perform the duties and responsibilities of that office. It was a total vindication from those unfounded and baseless attacks by her detractors who claim that her election was tainted with frauds and irregularities,” the lawyer said in a statement.
“Like many roads leading to the same destination, the 15 members of the PET may have varying views and opinions on how certain issues should be resolved, but such differences did not in anyway affect their unanimous conclusion that said protest should be dismissed for utter lack of merit,” he added.
Macalintal said the PET also conducted a recount of the ballots in the three pilot provinces chosen by Marcos himself to best represent where the alleged fraud have taken place, namely, Camarines Sur, Iloilo, and Negros Oriental.
“The Tribunal, as witnessed by Marcos’ representatives, ‘went over the ballots from the 5,415 clustered precincts in these pilot provinces (and) having carefully ruled on every claim and objection found protestee (Robredo) increasing her lead over protestant from 263,473 to 278,566, confirming her victory in the 2016 elections’,” he pointed out.
