House Deputy Minority leader and Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate on Wednesday called on the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) to extend its “no disconnection” period for at least six months.
“The six month extension of the no disconnection period would be enough time for electricity consumers to be in a better position to pay their bills considering that many lost their jobs and are finding it hard to just put a meal on the table,” Zarate said.
He also pointed out that “consumers especially now need electricity to alleviate the extraordinary heat this summer. If they go out because their electricity was disconnected then it may cause the further spreading of the Covid-19 virus and other diseases.”
Zarate also noted that despite the lockdowns and pandemic, Meralco earned P21.71 billion in electricity sales last year.
“Extending the no disconnection period will not mean the closure or bankruptcy of the distribution company but it will be of great help to consumers hard hit by the pandemic,” he added.
