Senator Manny Pacquiao is bent on running for president even if he fails to secure the endorsement of President Rodrigo Duterte, Politiko has learned.
Politiko sources said Pacquiao has been talking to local officials about his presidential bid.
The senator, sources said, is confident of his chances even if Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte is the current frontrunner in voter preference surveys.
“’Bulong daw ng Diyos’ na siya ang magiging susunod na presidente,” Politiko’s source said.
Sara has repeatedly said she isn’t keen on running for president. However, her supporters are determined to change her mind, even floating the possibility that she runs alongside her father.
Pacquiao is facing a crisis as his party, PDP-Laban, is plagued by infighting among politikos. He recently advised party members to ignore an invitation from Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi to attend the national assembly to be held in Cebu on May 31.
Cusi’s group has been pushing Duterte to run for vice president.
