On Locsin’s request: Gesmundo extends suspension of remote appearances of persons abroad

Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo has extended the suspension of the remote appearances of persons abroad in videoconference hearings being conducted by trial courts.

In a circular dated May 5, Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez informed judges of first and second level courts that “the suspension of the Guidelines on the Conduct of Videoconferencing with respect to remote appearances from abroad is hereby extended until 30 June 2021.”

Marquez explained Gesmundo granted the request of Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr.

The secretary told the chief justice in a letter dated April 21 that the formulation of internal guidelines remain pending and that there is a need to set up a partnership between the SC and DFA to train DFA personnel for video conferencing.

The guidelines for remote appearances abroad became effective last Jan. 16.

However, the SC previously decided last February to suspend its implementation until April 1 at the request of Locsin.
