Members of the Makabayan bloc have jointly filed a bill seeking emergency aid to students in times of national emergencies or crisis.
Kabataan Rep. Sarah Jane Elago led the filing of the measure seeking to institutionalize an emergency student aid and relief system to assist Filipino students in their expenses related to alternative modes of learning, including tuition, other school fees, gadgets, and internet connectivity among others.
“Students are experiencing difficulties as to how they can continue to fund their education because their parents are unemployed, underemployed, or receiving meager wages. While the country is in an economic crisis, public funds must be used primarily for basic social services, including education,” the bill read.
Under the measure, the government will give P1,000 assistance to students for tuition and other education related expenses and another P1,000 for online and modular learning expenses. The assistance will be given per month.
All recipients will receive the subsidy within 15 days after declaration of emergency or crisis. It has a provision to opt out.
The measure also includes the imposition of a moratorium on tuition and other school free increases.
