Iloilo City Mayor Jerry TreƱas is again appealing to Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) to settle its unpaid hospital claims in the city.

There’s been a surge in the city’s cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Hospitals are reportedly full, with some patients forced to wait five to six days before they can be given a room.

“We are almost pleading for PhilHealth to pay the hospitals so that the hospitals can hire more nurses, hire more personnel so that they can take care and open up more Covid beds but I don’t know… I hope that there will be some payment,” TreƱas said on Politiskoop.

He said PhilHealth owes their hospitals close to P900 million.

The city government has requested the Department of Health to deploy nurses in the city to augment their local hospitals’ staffing needs.

But no nurses have been deployed so far, prompting local officials to hire nursing aides and caregivers to assist in hospitals.

“Iloilo is not a big city and we don’t have big hospitals… These are small hospitals and if you owe them P100 million, P99 million, P75 million… You know, all the hospitals are on the brink of bankruptcy,” he said.
