Palace Spokesman Harry Roque on Monday challenged Vice President Leni Robredo to a debate on whether the Duterte administration has given away the country’s territories to China.
Roque extended the invitation to Robredo after the latter said that the debate between President Rodrigo Duterte and retired Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio on the West Philippine Sea (WPS) would have been a good public discourse.
“Kung talagang ayaw ni Associate Justice na makipagdebate sa ordinaryong abogado gaya ko dahil siya’y retiradong mahistrado ng Supreme Court, tayo po, magdebate po tayo kasi gaya ni Associate Justice Carpio, wala pong tigil ang pagsabi niyo na namimigay ng teritoryo ang Presidente,” the secretary said in a virtual presser.
According to him, someone from the opposition should prove that Duterte truly surrendered the country’s rights in the WPS.
“Yan po ang importanteng pag-usapan dahil paulit-ulit ninyong pong sinasabi na ang independent foreign policy ng ating Pangulo ay surrender ng soberenya natin. Ipakita po nating sa taong bayan sa pamamagitan ng debate, paano masu-surrender ang soberenya ng Pilipinas na wala naman pong nawawalang teritoryo sa administrasyon ni Presidente Duterte,” he added.
Carpio earlier turned down a debate with Roque after Duterte backed out of his own challenge for a face-off.
