The Department of Justice (DOJ) will look into whether it is legal to distribute Ivermectin to the public or not, said Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra.
Guevarra made the assurance after Anakalusugan party-list Rep. Mike Defensor and Sagip party-list Rep. Rodante Marcoleta have begun distributing the anti-parasitic drug for animals to Quezon City residents against the COVID-19 virus.
“The DOJ is carefully studying all the legal issues involved, including the legal basis for the exceptions cited by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) director general, before taking any further action.
Guevarra also assured that doctors involved in the distribution of Ivermectin will not escape scrutiny should an investigation push through.
“For now, the legal issues muna,” he pointed out.
“Should an investigation be necessary, the identity and qualifications of the doctors involved will have to be looked into,” he said.
Guevarra earlier warned that Ivermectin has not yet been registered for human use.
However, he said FDA Director General Rolando Enrique Domingo mentioned exemptions in using unregistered drugs, that is, upon issuance of a compassionate use authorization to specific hospitals, doctors, or other entities; and when compounded by duly licensed pharmacies with a doctor’s prescription.
To this, Guevarra admitted being “not too sure whether these two exemptions cited by the FDA director general have a sound legal bases so that is something that is for further study.”
