The Philippine National Police (PNP) has allowed the Department of Justice (DOJ) to look into 61 cases where the PNP held accountable the policemen involved in anti-illegal drugs operations that resulted to deaths, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said on Monday (May 24).
Meanwhile, Guevarra lauded PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar who agreed during his meeting with the secretary last Friday (May 21) to allow the DOJ to look into the cases the PNP’s Internal Affairs Service (PNP-IAS) has investigated.
“The decision of the new PNP chief to allow DOJ access to its IAS files is a very significant milestone in the government’s efforts to exact accountability. while eradication of the illegal drug scourge remains a top priority of the present administration,” Guevarra said.
“It is also its major concern to conduct this campaign in the proper way and preserve its legitimate character,” he added.
For its part, Guevarra assured “the DOJ fully supports the PNP in its quest to rid its ranks of erring and abusive personnel, and thus maintain the respect of the people for the PNP as an institution dedicated to their protection.”
“We understand that the PNP IAS had investigated thousands of drug-related deaths but found 61 cases/incidents where clear liability was established,” the secretary noted.
