The country should protect the rights of Filipino fishermen to freely fish in the West Philippine Sea amid incursions and threats from other nations, Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) President Domingo Egon Cayosa said on Saturday, May 1.
“Itaguyod ang karapatan ng mga mangingisdang Pilipino sa Exclusive Economic Zone ng Pilipinas at magkaisa tayong manindigan laban sa panghihimasok, pang-aagaw at panggigipit ng dayuhan sa ating karagatan,” he declared during the country’s celebration of Labor Day.
With this, Cayosa reminded Filipinos to respect the rights of workers.
The IBP chief stated “ibigay ang nararapat na sahod at benepisyo, unawain ang kanilang pangangailangan o kahilingan at bigyan ng ayuda ang mga nawalan ng trabaho.”
He also urged to have workplaces free from the COVID-19 virus and get workers vaccinated for free.
Aside from this, Cayosa also voiced the need for justice for labor leaders and organizers who got killed or have been experiencing harassment.
“Pangalagahan ang seguridad ng mga OFW at tulungan silang makauwi o kaya makabalik sa trabaho,” he also said.
With the pandemic still ongoing, Cayosa called on Filipinos to thank and pray for frontliners “na patuloy ginagampanan ang tungkulin sa kabila ng panganib, pagod, at pangamba.”
