Uniform break: SC allows employees to wear what they want… as long as it’s fit for court

The Supreme Court (SC) had decided to continue to relax the wearing of office uniforms for court employees of the judiciary in areas that are not yet under modified general community quarantine (MGCQ).

In a circular dated May 6, Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez said the tribunal has granted the request of the SC Employees Association (SCEA) concerning the relaxation of the wearing of office uniforms.

Marquez informed first and second level courts that employees have been allowed “to wear wash day clothes effective 03 May 2021 until the implementation of the Modified General Community Quarantine (MGCQ), provided that all court employees shall wear decent and presentable attire while on official duty.”

The SC acted on the March 22 letter of the SCEA for the further extension of the relaxation on the rules of wearing of office uniforms “in view of the stricter general community quarantine (GCQ) status in Metro Manila and nearby provinces, and the surging cases of the different variant of the coronavirus (Covid-19) in the country.”

The SC previously relaxed the rules last February and March.

In the approved memorandum of the SC, the Committee for Office Uniform for the SC cited “the plight of court employees who resort to walking or bringing their own motorcycles, scooters, or bicycles to work because of limited public transportation due to strict quarantine protocols.”
