As COVID-19 pandemic continues: Duterte calls on Pinoys ‘to be heroes in our own right’

President Rodrigo Duterte urged Filipinos to “be heroes in our own right” as the country marked the 123rd year of its independence from Spanish colonizers.

In a video message aired Saturday (June 12), Duterte said the challenges of 2020—including the COVID-19 pandemic—tested the country’s character.

“Each of us has been called upon to be heroes in our own right — in fighting for our survival and in devoting ourselves to the common good, just as our heroes did more than a century ago,” he said.

“With their noble example inspiring us, we look forward to a brighter future filled with hope that we will overcome the challenges brought by this pandemic,” Duterte added.

The President will mark Independence Day at ceremonies to be held in Bulacan this afternoon.
