Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Jaime Morente expressed dismay that illegal recruiters continue to victimize underaged Filipinas for work in the Middle East amid the ongoing COVID-19 virus pandemic.
“These human traffickers are victimizing the youth by enticing them to agree to such schemes,” said Morente in a statement.
The BI chief victims eventually “end up in vulnerable situations abroad because of this scheme.
“These recruiters are not stopping despite the pandemic, and this modus should be curbed immediately,” he pointed out.
Morente issued the statement after two Filipinas from Cotabato who misrepresented themselves as being at least 26 years old were intercepted by immigration officers last June 24 at the Clark International Airport before they could board a flight bound to Saudi Arabia where they intend to work as household service workers (HSW).
Morente reminded that minimum age for deployment for HSWs is 23 years old.
“It was later confirmed that they have misrepresented their age, and they admitted that their documents were merely processed for them by their recruiter,” said Morente.
“We have turned over their cases to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking for further investigation, to be able to file cases, arrest and jail these recruiters,” he added.
