House OKs grant of retirement benefits to kin of dead ex-prosecutors

By Billy Begas

The House of Representatives has approved the measure granting survivorship benefits to the legitimate spouse and dependent children of a deceased retired member of the National Prosecution Service (NPS).

Voting 247 affirmative, no negative and abstention, the House approved on third and final reading House Bill 9087.

The spouse and dependent children of a member of NPS who is eligible to retire optionally at the time of death shall also receive all the retirement benefits that the deceased was receiving or entitled to receive.

The surviving spouse shall continue to receive the retirement benefits during his/her lifetime or until he/she remarries.

In case the deceased member has no surviving legitimate spouse of dependent children, his/her parents shall receive the retirement benefits.

The measure also included in the grant of the benefits those who died one year prior to the effectivity of the law.
