Magpapaubaya kay Isko? Robredo wants opposition to field ‘best candidate with broadest support’

Vice President Leni Robredo wants the “best candidate with the broadest support” to go against President Rodrigo Duterte’s anointed bet in the 2022 presidential race, her spokesperson said Friday (June 4).

In an interview on One News’ “The Chiefs,” abogado Barry Gutierrez said Robredo supports the 1Sambayan coalition’s selection process for presidential and vice presidential candidates who will represent the opposition.

“The fact na she is allowing that process to unfold and express support for it is her exercising her leadership role. She’s not insisting na kami lang ito,” Gutierrez said.

1Sambayan, which counts among its convenors retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, is a coalition of various groups across the political spectrum.

Robredo, meanwhile, is the chairperson of the Liberal Party (LP).

Asked if Robredo will concede to 1Sambayan’s choice of candidate even if it’s someone like Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, Gutierrez said: “Again I do not know the answer to that. I don’t know what 1Sambayan’s decision will be. But it will not be the only factor she will consider in deciding whether or not to run.”

“But her priority is clear. She (Robredo) wants the best candidate with the broadest support for 2022,” Gutierrez added.

Robredo has yet to announce her political plans for 2022. She has been vocal about the possibility of running for a local post instead of the presidency.

1Sambayan has said that aside from Robredo and Moreno, it is considering Senators Nancy Binay and Grace Poe, and former senator Antonio Trillanes IV as potential presidential or vice presidential candidates.
