Voter blaming all over again: ‘Heckler’ gets heckled for elitist take on polls

Blogger Loi Reyes Landicho, known as The Professional Heckler, is drawing flak on Twitter for implying Filipino voters are stupid.

Landicho’s tweet didn’t sit well with writer Katrina Stuart Santiago, who pointed out that it’s the so-called “smarter” voters who should be faulted for failing to communicate their candidates’ message to the public.

“Kung in-effort nating mag-nilay nitong nakaraang limang taon, mare-realize natin na hindi ito tungkol sa ‘talino’ ng Filipino voters, kungdi tungkol sa kakulangan ng sinasabi nating matalino na makatawid sa tinutukoy nating botante. Sino ngayon ang hangal. #Halalan2022,” Santiago (@radikalchick) tweeted.

Another writer, Jerry Gracio (@JerryGracio) tweeted: “Hindi sukatan ng talino ang eleksyon, hindi naman ‘to exam. Maraming factors: support ng local political leaders, pera na ipinapamudmod tuwing halalan,ang ating mga echo chamber, koneksiyon sa karaniwang tao, ‘yung mismong pagturing sa mga botante bilang ‘bobo,’ etc etc etc.”

Sociologist Nicole Curato said the elite should be held accountable for funding the campaigns of traditional politikos.

“Kung matatalino lang ang mas maraming Filipino elite, sigurado na hindi nila popondohan ang kandidatura ng mga trapo. Hold elites accountable. Voters cannot choose well when we don’t really have a choice,” Curato (@NicoleCurato) tweeted.

Netizen @BaconUpon said name calling won’t win voters over: “You can not win someone by calling him/her ‘Stupid or Idiot’. Neither you can educate them if you yourself act like uneducated. Its about time to change the tone.”

Twitter user @KimTan37614836 agreed: “kaya natatalo kayong mga dilawan eh.. kung maka underestimate kayo sa mga pilipino, wagas. kaya wala talaga kayong ka-amor amor sa masa! losers!”

Landicho tweeted a clarification about his statement Saturday (June 5) as criticism mounted over his original remark.

“Lilinawin ko lang: Ang ibig kong sabihin dito ay kung matalino ang mas maraming voters sa pagpili ng kandidato – may kaya man o wala sa buhay; nag-aral man o hindi. Nagkulang ang paliwanag kaya ang daming nag-react at umabot na sa masa vs elite; summa cum laude etc. Hindi ganun,” he said.
