Vice President Leni Robredo could announce whether or not she’s running for president in September, or a month before the filing of certificates of candidacy (COC), her spokesperson said.
In an interview on One News’ “The Chiefs” Friday (June 4), Barry Gutierrez said Robredo is still undecided on her political plans at the moment.
“Well, I’ve heard her say that it could be as late as September. It could be sooner than September. But quite honestly, the only person who can say at this point is her. She’s going through her own process,” he said.
Gutierrez’s statement came at the heels of recent pronouncements that Robredo will run for governor of Camarines Sur and not the presidency.
Last month, former senator Antonio Trillanes IV volunteered to be shortlisted as a presidential aspirant of the opposition coalition 1Sambayan because Robredo was reportedly preparing for her gubernatorial run. Former Camarines Sur Rep. Rolando Andaya Jr. also made a similar claim.
Asked if he believes there’s an effort to pressure Robredo to declare her candidacy early, Gutierrez said: “Well, that has crossed my mind. I’m sure it has crossed the mind of every political analyst out there as well. Because as you correctly pointed out earlier, Ma’am Amy, the person who runs ahead of the pack this early usually gets shot.”
Gutierrez said that while Robredo acknowledges the clamor for her to run for president, she should be given the time and space to discern what she should do in the upcoming elections.
