Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte hit Vice President Leni Robredo Monday (June 14) for expressing alarm over the surge in COVID-19 cases in the Dutertes’ bailiwick, saying the latter is clueless about what’s happening on the ground.
In a strongly worded statement, Duterte said Robredo should not use the spike of COVID-19 cases in Davao “in her attempt at politicking.”
“The Vice President should refrain from giving advice if she knows nothing about what is happening on the ground. This has been the hallmark of her term as VP, where she puts forth comments on matters and affairs she lacks understanding and knowledge on and does not offer anything helpful to solve a problem,” the presidential daughter said.
On her radio show Sunday (June 13), Robredo said it can no longer be “business as usual” in Davao, which is among the cities outside Metro Manila experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases.
She said President Rodrigo Duterte’s hometown could learn from the experience of Cebu, which managed to bring down the number of new COVID-19 cases after a surge.
“Makakatulong na tingnan kung anong ginawa sa Cebu. Kasi kung titingnan mo ngayon na nagsaspike na, sa Cebu parang controlled, ‘di ba? Parang controlled and marami ang ginawa—ang partnership doon, hindi lang talaga LGU (local government unit) pero very active doon ang medical community,” Robredo said.
Duterte, however, told Robredo not to attack Davao City’s medical community since they’ve been hard at work treating COVID-19 cases. She said the Vice President should know that surges in COVID-19 cases in other countries are caused primarily by asymptomatic cases that can only be detected through aggressive testing.
“There will be a proper time to attack my performance as an LCE in this pandemic if she dares to run for President,” Duterte said.
Both Duterte and Robredo are being touted as potential presidential candidates in the 2022 elections. The two women, however, have yet to disclose their plans.
